The meeting between the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and industry unions will hold today at the agency’s office in Abuja.

The meeting, which was called last Friday, at the instance of the agency was to resolve the crisis between the unions and the agency over its plan to shut operations at NCAA.

This is as the Director-General, NCAA, Capt. Muhtar Usman, insisted that the country’s airspace would continually be opened to flights operations and called on all air travellers to disregard any notice of travel ban in Nigeria.

Statements from the spokesman of NCAA, Mr. Sam Adurogboye, said that the postponement and shifting of the meeting to Abuja was to enable all parties be present at the meeting.

Adurogboye hinted that separate meetings were held at the NCAA conference room in Lagos last Friday with the sister union, the Air Transport Senior Staff Services Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), and later with the representatives of the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), and National Association of Aircraft Pilot and Engineers (NAAPE).

Adurogboye noted that it was at the Lagos meeting that an agreement was reached with the NCAA management to suspend any form of industrial action and the circular to that effect was promptly circulated to all members.

He added that at the meeting, both parties unanimously decided that the union executives would go back to their members and engage in further consultations, while another meeting was scheduled for Monday, before it was postponed till Tuesday.

Speaking on the airspace closure, Usman maintained that any notice of travel ban within the country’s airspace was absolute falsehood, misleading and the handiwork of some mischief-makers.

It would be recalled that leaderships of NUATE and NAAPE had through an open letter to all its members in NCAA had threatened to paralyse activities in the regulatory agency over what they described as non-adherence to condition of service with respect to promotion of workers and other welfare issues.
