Army’ll go tough on obese personnel – COAS

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, over the weekend, in Jos, the Plateau State capital, said the Nigerian Army would not tolerate any officer or its personnel growing obese as this would be counter-productive for the service. He also told officers and personnel to always keep fit.

He advised that regular exercise was required for every soldier at all times.

He made this statement in his first visit to the headquarters of the 3 Division Nigerian Army, Division Maxwell Khobe Cantonment, in Jos.

In his words: The Nigerian Army is known for its discipline and also physical fitness. If you keep fit at all times you are rest assured that your mental and physical health will improve.

Obesity in the military is not allowed and cannot be tolerated. No soldier should be found to be obese”, he said.

“I am here to see my soldiers and officers together with their families, so that we can know each other very well. I want to intimate them with my vision statement, so that we can all run with it. This visit would have come earlier but because of the uprising in the north-eastern part of Nigeria we have been busy with containing with the insurgents,” he said.

The army boss also frowned at insubordination, saying that soldiers must be loyal and focused. “Loyalty must be 100% to your superiors and to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria”, he affirmed.

Buratai, while interacting with newsman said Boko Haram was no longer holding any Nigeria territory. He said the December deadline set by Buhari to end Boko Haram was realistic, as the security agencies had more equipment and soldiers on the ground to ensure they meet the deadline.

“We are not thinking of missing the deadline; we still have November and December to ensure victory over Boko Haram”, the army said.
