The members of the Enugu State House of Assembly, have amended the Enugu State Judicial Service Law in accordance with Section 197 of 1999 Nigerian Constitution.
The amendment of the law enacted in 2004, was to review the composition of the members of the Judicial Service Commission as is obtainable in other states of the federation.
According to the constitution, members of the Commission is made up of the state chief judge, who will act as the chairman; attorney general; president of customary court; two legal practitioners and two non-legal members but in the case of Enugu State only legal members and one non-legal member was provided.
By the new amendment, the commission will now comprise of the Chief Judge, Attorney General, President of Customary Court, two legal officers with ten years of experience and two non-legal members.
The amendment of the law has passed first, second and third reading on the floor of the House.
The bill captioned, “Enugu State Judicial Service Commission Amendment House Bill 4, 2015, presented by the leader of the House, Hon. Ikechukwu Ezeugwu, Udenu Constituency, took effect immediately from October 27, 2015.
