The Kaduna State Government is set to upgrade its abattoirs with a view to improving the hygienic nature of the business, not only for the health of the citizens, but also to attract international interest in the beef from the state.
The Commissioner of Agriculture, Dr. Daniel Monzo Maigeri, hinted at a press briefing where he deplored the hygienic state of abattoirs in the state and, of course, regretted inability of successive administrations to address the issue owing to socio-cultural and religious sentiment.
He said plan was being concluded to dispatch a number of people to Saudi Arabia and one other Islamic country to see what goes on there with a view to detaching religion from the business.
According to him, “We have issue with our meat hygiene. We gone round, looked at our abattoirs and believed that that sector holds great potentials for players. For example, the abattoir employs about 30,000 people state-wide, but they are not regulated in any form.”
Maigeri lamented that “to say the least, the level of unhygienic there is very much. We have the potential to export meat because our meat is largely organic, but our meat cannot make it in the international market because of the level of hygiene”.
