NURTW seeks state of emergency for Kwara roads

National Union of Road Transport Workers, (NURTW),

The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has asked the Federal Government to declare state of emergency on the deplorable condition of highways in Kwara State.

Speaking with journalists after his re-election for the second term at the eighth quadrennial state delegates’ conference of the union in Ilorin, at the weekend, the Kwara State Chairman of the NURTW, Alhaji Aliyu Issa Ore, said many lives and property had been lost due to dilapidated condition of the roads.

Ore, specifically, listed Ilorin/Jebba/Mokwa, Ilorin/Egbe, Ajase/Ila Odo among others, as some of the highways that needed urgent attention of the federal government, adding that the declaration of state of emergency on the roads would enable the government to act fast on the bad condition of the highways.

The NURTW chairman said that the declaration of state of emergency would also make the federal government pay attention to the roads thereby alleviating suffering of the motorists and residents of communities along the highways.

Meanwhile, the state council of NURTW has donated 20 Toyota Camry cars to administrative council members of the union.

The state chairman said the donation was in continuation of his administration’s commitment to prioritise welfare of members.

Ore enumerated his achievements in office in the last four years to include purchase of plots of land, officials cars, guest house project, sponsoring of members on holy pilgrimage, renovation of state secretariat, empowerment of members of Okada branch of the union, seminars/workshops and welfare package as some of the programmes, which are now having desirable impact.
