The Ondo State Command of the Nigeria Drug and Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), says no fewer than 3,500 Kg of cannabis, otherwise known as indian hemp, had been seized by its officers within the purview of two months in the state.
Muhammed Sokoto, the State Commandant of the agency disclosed this on Sunday, in an interview with journalists in Akure, the state capital.
Sokoto also said about 36 tonnes of the substance were destroyed while 11 drug peddlers, including three females were apprehended at a separate operation carried out by the agency in Owo, Ifon, Ogbese and Itaogbolu areas of the state.
He said that the command was confronted with numerous challenges among which was pinning down the main kingpin cultivating the forbidden substance in the bushes of the state.
“The major challenge we have is that the main cannabis sativa cultivators and land owners are not easily found but we arrest and prosecute those found on the land.
“Sometimes, labourers give us necessary information that lead to the arrest of their bosses and the land owners,” he added.
