Youths belonging to a body known as Ondo National Youth Front (ONYF), on Thursady, warned management of Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), to desist from issuing arbitrary bills to electricity consumers in Akure and its environs.

It said it would no longer take it easy with staffers of company if the trend of ambiguous and unrealistic monthly bills and charges did not cease.

A statement by its Co-ordinator, Olusegun Adegbola, said it became necessary for BEDC to regulate and normalise its billing system to reflect accurate charges rather than cheating innocent customers.

The statement said: “The current billing system of BDEC has become a matter of concern to the residents and electricity consumers in Ondo State. It calls for urgent review and adjustment. But the company has remained nonchalant to the yearnings of the people for months.

“We, as a youth group in the state, can no longer fold our arms when our parents, brothers, sisters and colleagues continue to suffer unjustly in the hands of BDEC. We paid bogus electricity bills, even when no electricity was consumed during the period under review.”

The group called on BDEC to restore electricity supply to the Southern Senatorial District of the state which had not been supplied electricity for over a year ago. ‎

It said the entire district could not be thrown into perpetual darkness over unsubstantiated debt.‎
