Shekarau advocates community policing

Ibrahim Shekarau

Former Minister of Education, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, has said that Nigeria needs to adopt community policing to decisively address the insecurity challenges facing the country.

Shekarau called for the provision of grazing routes for herdsmen across the country.

He spoke in Akure, Ondo state capital, while commiserating with Chief Olu Falae over his abduction. ‎

The former ANPP Presidential candidate, condemned Falae’s abduction and described it as an act of wickedness against the elder statesman.

Shekarau noted that the recurrent clashes between herdsmen and farmers were not regional problems but a serious national issue that needed to be addressed before getting out of hand.

The former minister ascribed the clashes to lack of social justice, calling for peace and tolerance among herdsmen and farmers.

‎He said: “It is important that we ensure social justice for all Nigerians. While efforts should be made to ensure that the routes for grazing are not blocked, support should be given to farmers to prevent herders from grazing in their farms.

“Government should set the pace in ensuring that these different interests are protected. And when government sets the pace, the community will follow.”

Shekarau urged Falae not to allow the incident to deter him from rendering useful services for the development of the nation.
