Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa
Speaker Mudashiru Obasa of the Lagos State House of Assembly, on Thursday told guests including Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of the state, traditional rulers and top members of the All Progressives Congress, APC, that his return to the House in 2019 was not certain.
Obasa also revealed that some of the 39 other lawmakers would not be returning to the House and that they have already confirmed to him that their constituents would not vote for them in the next election.
The Speaker, who said this just before the governor’s presentation of the 2016 budget of N662.588 billion, also mentioned some old members of the House as being in the same predicament with him.
He told his former colleagues including two former speakers Adeyemi Ikuforiji and Jokotola Pelumi, as well as Babatunde Adejare, who is now a commissioner in the state, that he would join them some day, but did not specify when.
Speaking at the budget presentation shown live on the state television, LTV, he said he was awaiting the national leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, to decide his fate.
“Some of us have been here for a long time. I came here in 2003 and some people left me here.
“Today is my day, it is the first budget proposal I would be receiving and I know it is also the first for the governor.”
The Speaker also took time to make the budget presentation lively as he caused laughter all through.
He also relentlessly demanded that the governor must show his dancing skills as the Assembly choir rendered various tunes.
Obasa also pleaded with the traditional rulers at the budget presentation to award the governor chieftaincy titles and that he expects that the governor would be addressed as a chief when he comes for budget presentation in 2017.
The Speaker had described the 2016 Appropriation bill as significant in that it is the first budget proposal to be presented by the governor.
“For this singular reason, we are all hopeful and expectant that this coming year will witness more of democracy dividends for betterment of Lagos and Lagosians,” he said, noting that some residents of the state still live in abject poverty.
“In treating this budget, we will not forget that we are trustees for the people.
“A lot has indeed been done in the area of job creation and economic empowerment of Lagosians.
“But there is a dire need to create more opportunities for our people; more jobs will definitely lead to greater economic growth.
“Be that as it may, we will like to call the attention of our governor to the situation of traffic jam in the state, which I believe the governor is so much aware of and has taken steps in managing since his resumption in office.
“Though this may not be our own doing, it is an inherited circumstance, we must continue to proffer lasting solutions to it. It is our thought that addressing the issue of traffic in this state will further simplify life for commuters and engender economic growth.
“We need not be reminded that easy movement of people and goods is essential and important to the economy of a state. Therefore, we must continue to forge ahead,” he said while commending the governor for making provision for a flyover in Agege area of the state.
